Pisa Itinerary: 1 Day

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is perhaps one of the biggest tourist attractions in all of Europe, but there’s more to Pisa than that. Even though it is crowded with hoards of tourists daily, the rest of the town (a few blocks from the tower) is pretty devoid of tourists. If you make a point to get away from the crowds, you can find a very pleasant, authentic Tuscan town hiding inside of Pisa’s Instagrammer shell.

The city can be a nice place to stay a couple of nights, but it also works great as a day trip from Lucca or Florence. This Pisa itinerary will help you plan the best activities for one day in Pisa.

Field Of Miracles

Leaning Tower of Pisa ★★★

Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy

This is the quintessential Pisa sight and the only must see on any Pisa itinerary.

The most important view of the tower (from the ground) is free, but if you want to climb to the top (worth ★★), you’ll have to reserve a time. The views are pretty good and seeing the town from that high up can give you a sense of how powerful medieval Pisa must have been.

Reservations: Reserve online 2-20 days in advance here.
Cost and Hours: €20-27 per person depending on whether you pay for the other sights. Open 9:00am-10:00pm.

Duomo ★★

Duomo Interior Pisa Italy

This cathedral may be more impressive than the tower. You should definitely make time to see the interior of this free sight and appreciate the classic Pisan style. This is located next door to the leaning tower.

Cost and Hours: Free. Just show your ticket to any related sight when you enter. If you are not paying to enter any of the other sights, you will need to pick up a free pass at the ticket office to enter the cathedral. Open 10:00am-8:00pm.

Baptistry

Baptistry Pisa Italy

This type of building is typical for the time. Those who weren’t baptized weren’t allowed to enter the cathedral, so the baptistry had to be in a separate building. This is worth seeing briefly if it comes with your ticket, but not really worth paying extra for unless you’re interested.

Cost and Hours: €7-27 depending on what other sights you pay to see. Open 9:00am-8:00pm.

Camposanto Cemetery

Camposanto Cemetery Pisa Italy

This cemetery is peaceful and beautiful. The main thing to see here is the interior cloistered courtyard with its 14th century frescos. This is worth walking around briefly if you have the time.

Cost and Hours: €7-27 depending on what other sights you pay to see. Open 9:00am-8:00pm.

Walk Around Town ★★

Piazza del Cavalieri Pisa Italy

Pisa is actually a pretty cute town, but you have to get away from the overwhelming quantity of tourist traps and souvenir stores that cluster around the Field of Miracles. There is no specific route to follow here. Starting at the leaning tower, walk down via Santa Maria until it stops being overly touristy, then wander down side streets from there to your heart’s content. If at any point a street to your left or right looks nice, follow your heart. Don’t worry about getting lost, Google Maps will get you wherever you want when you’re done walking.
