The ancient Roman city of Pompeii was a prosperous town until the morning of August 24th, AD 79. This is the day that Mount Vesuvius erupted and buried Pompeii in over 10 feet of ash, preserving it for hundreds of years. Today, it is the most popular archeological site in the world.
A visit to Pompeii gives you a glimpse into the layout of an ancient Roman town, with its central gathering spaces, organized side streets, water delivery system, sewage system, baths, and more. With a good guide, you can get a sense of the daily life of the ancient residents here.

How To Tour Pompeii
There are several ways to tour the ruins of Pompeii. You can try exploring on your own, using the Pompeii free map that comes with your ticket.

For most attractions, we prefer a self-guided option. However, in Pompeii, we do not recommend doing it yourself, as you will get much more out of your experience if you have a guide. This tour of the ruins with an archeologist is a good value, and can be done as a small-group tour or private tour. There are also several options which combine the trip to Pompeii with other activities in the area, as well as some that include transportation from Naples or Rome. Check out this list of options when planning your trip.

How To Get To Pompeii
Day Trip To Pompeii From Naples
Pompeii is easy to get to. Simply take the ~40-minute Circumvesuviana train from Naples (or Sorrento).
Day Trip To Pompeii From Rome
You can also get there in about 2 hours by train from Rome (switch to the Circumvesuviana train in Naples).
Make sure you get off at the Pompei-Scavi stop, not the stop for the modern town of Pompei. Google maps can help. For any questions, ask a ticketing agent at the train station. You can also get there by car or bus.
