This 1-day Liverpool itinerary helps first time visitors cover all the major sights in one day. Do these activities in the order listed to maximize your time. There are also several excellent sights for those with special interests listed at the end of this itinerary. If you are interested in enough of these you may need to skip the cathedrals or add an extra day in town.
ABOUT LIVERPOOL
Liverpool is a favorite for Beatles fans, but is also worth a trip to see a “regular city” in England. This red brick city is full of normal people who work for a living and speak with a thick Liverpudlian accent. Historically this was an important shipping port with large docks and extensive warehousing for ship loading and unloading. However, once container shipping was invented, there was no longer a need to warehouse items before/after shipping and Liverpool fell into decline. This was remedied after 2008, when Liverpool was named a European Capital of Culture. This came with considerable investment in the city and the dock warehouses were converted into restaurants and bars, and this area became a popular place to gather. The docks are now one of the main attractions of Liverpool and a great place to get a meal, drink, or an ice cream.

Liverpool Itinerary For 1 Day
Beatles Bus Tour ★★★

You must take a bus tour to see all the suburban Beatles sights in an efficient manner. We recommend the Magical Mystery Tour, which we enjoyed. The guide was fun, friendly, and informative. You spend most of your time on the bus, but you do get out for photo ops at key places like Paul McCartney’s house, Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, and George Harrison’s house. It can get booked in high season, so we recommend reserving 1-2 days in advance.
Cost and Hours: $24.50 per person. Tours at 10:10am, 11:00am, 1:00pm, and 2:00pm
Website: To book this tour, click here.
Address: Anchor Courtyard, 32 Gower St, Liverpool L3 4AS
Albert Dock ★★★

This area is now one of the hottest spots in Liverpool. Walk around and explore the dock. Make sure you don’t miss the Beatles statues (click here for location). If the weather is nice, take a stroll on the path around the very edge of the dock to enjoy the harbor.
This is an excellent place to stop for lunch. We ate at Gusto, a delicious Italian restaurant with quality food and reasonable prices. We ended up eating there again the next day, because it was so good and we are addicted to pasta.

Address for Gusto: Edward Pavilion, Albert Dock, Liverpool, L3 4AF
Liverpool Cathedral & Metropolitan Cathedral ★

These two cathedrals are important to the city and could not be more different. The most important one to tour is Liverpool Cathedral, but the Metropolitan Cathedral is interesting as a comparison, as well as a good excuse to walk down the pretty Hope Street between cathedrals.
Cost and Hours:
Liverpool Cathedral open daily 10:00am-6:00pm.
Metropolitan Cathedral open daily 7:30am-6:00pm. Admission is free for both.

Address:
Liverpool Cathedral: St James Mt, Liverpool L1 7AZ
Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral: Cathedral House, Mount Pleasant, Liverpool L3 5TQ
St George’s Hall ★

From the Metropolitan Cathedral walk to St. Georges Plateau (in front of St George’s Hall) across from Lime Street Station. You don’t need to go into the hall, this is just an opportunity to take in the grand Georgian (Neoclassical) architecture of the area and the WWI/WWII memorial in the center of the plateau. Walk from here to St. John’s Gardens and stroll through the gardens to the bottom of the hill past numerous statues and memorials, including a memorial to the victims of the Hillsborough Stadium tragedy. From the bottom of the hill, go left on Whitechapel and walk down this street, stopping anywhere you fancy. Eventually, you’ll make your way to Stanley Street, where you’ll turn right. Then take your first left onto Mathew Street.
Mathew Street & Cavern Club ★★★

The famous Mathew Street is the home of the Cavern Club ★★★. This is the first club where the Beatles played, and they played here numerous times before and after they made it big. In general, this street is full of tourist-trap bars and shops, but the Cavern club is a must-see, even for the most casual of Beatles fans. There is live music there from 12p-12a daily if you decide to stay after seeing the famous stage.
Cost and Hours: £5 per person. Open 11:30am until late. Closing hours vary by day of week, check website for details.

Address: 10 Mathew St, Liverpool L2 6RE

Other must-do’s for special interests (stars listed here for those interested only. If you aren’t interested in the subject, you should skip the following sights).
Paul McCartney and John Lennon’s Childhood Homes ★★★

If you are a serious Beatles fan, you absolutely must go here. You need to reserve these tours well in advance, at least a couple of weeks.
Cost and Hours: Guided tours daily at 10:30am, 11:10am, 2:20pm, and 3:00pm. £10 per adult.
Website: Book this tour on the Beatles-childhood-homes tour website.
Liverpool Beatles Museum ★★

If you are a diehard Beatles fan, this small museum on Mathew Street may interest you. However, we suggest casual fans avoid this establishment. There is minimal Beatles history here, but rather it is a collection of objects curated by a roadie who is related to the first drummer of the Beatles, Pete Best (who was with the band for the first couple of years and is not known to most). Because of this relationship, it is heavy on Pete Best items, which most people won’t be interested in. That being said, the collection of items is extensive and if seeing a pair of eyeglasses that John Lennon borrowed sounds like your cup of tea, then this museum is a must.
Cost and Hours: Open daily 10:00am-4:00pm. £15 per adult.

Address: 23 Mathew St, Liverpool L2 6RE
Anfield – Liverpool FC Stadium ★★★

If you are a Liverpool Football Club fan, you should definitely add a stadium tour to your 1-day Liverpool itinerary. This visit is only possible by guided tour scheduled in advance. Arrive at least 10 minutes before your scheduled time.
Cost and Hours: Check website for tour availability. £23 per adult.
Website: To book this tour, click here.
Address: Anfield Rd, Anfield, Liverpool L4 0TH
Museum of Liverpool ★★

If you are particularly interested in the history of Liverpool, this is an excellent, free museum that tells the story of this city. The Museum of Liverpool has extensive history from prehistoric times to the present, and is laid out in a fun way for kids to enjoy as well.
Cost and Hours: Open Tuesday-Sunday 10:00am-6:00pm. Admission is free.

Address: Pier Head, Mann Island, Liverpool L3 1DG
Practical Info – Liverpool Itinerary For 1 Day
Getting Around Liverpool
Most things on this 1-day Liverpool itinerary are accessible on foot. We recommend against driving here. If you want to go somewhere like Anfield, you can take the bus. These are clean and safe, buy your ticket when you board the bus (credit cards accepted). Sit on the second level for the best experience. There are also trains if you need to go further.
What To Wear In Liverpool
Bring layers when coming to Liverpool, as the climate is temperate, but very windy – especially down by the docks.
